My parcel shelf is major messed up! The previous owners decided it was a good idea to make speaker holes by RIPPING the metal! Not only did I cut myself many times on these blades of metal hanging into the boot, but it also looks like poo.

I have a mint parcel shelf in my spare mk2, and can easily cut it out. The problem is with welding... To do a good job here, it'll cost quite a lot for this, as I've seen a few with really messed up bulkheads and the bit under the rear screen after welding this.

So I thought: Can I cut out the old one leaving a border of a few cm around, and screw the new one onto the old one with like 50 bolts/nuts? To show what I mean see the attached picture. The red bit is what would be left from the original shelf and the black is the new shelf.

I would tack it in with some weld mate, jus do an inch slug then miss an inch, then another slug and so on...

Or, doin it like you said will be fine. I may be tempted to use rivits instead tho.

I really need to get one anyway, might be a good time! If not, then screws it is! I'll make sure to get some very pretty shiny stainless ones :)

It really needs to be welded. If you just intend to cover it up, just put some carpet over it

The original needs to be cut out, no matter what. I'm not having it welded, so I'm pretty sure I'll stick with this method!

Just remember that the parcel shelf does add strenght to the body shell.

And in Cyprus don't you need the shell as strong as possable, Well the Pajiaro that I hired there last year did ;-)))))))

i'll go with al on this one can you post a pick of how bad the shelf is, what might be best is to clean up the bodge with a file, so its no longer sharp, then if its not that bad you can use a piece of thin wood as a plate under the new carpet for the parcel shelf. coice is yours of course!
