I see a few places around offering engine steam cleans but can anyone recomend where to go to get a good engine clean or a guide on the best way of getting under the bonnet back to its former glory?

Im told steam cleaning can damage some things, and with the electrics being so susseptable(sp?) to water damage etc, its not the best idea... please correct me if im wrong, but this is the opinion i have heard.

Ive been trying to do the same, and found that good ole' elbow grease and lots of rags, with some kind of cleaner works well... Gunk is supposedly pretty good at removing that stuborn dirt.

I can see the colour of my block again, its getting there!

there was a thread on here which said that Cilit Bang Universal Degreaser worked quite well. Don't know how well, perhaps if the person who started that thread is reading they could eleborate. (I need to do mine as well)

Whilst at the local motor factors today picking up my stuff, i had a look at cleaning products, Gunk apparently (i didnt realise this) should be sprayed off with copious amounts of water, which isnt ideal in the slightest.. so perhaps cilit bang would be a better idea?

Any motor factors / spares shop should stock engine degreasant,
Try get a bio degradable one (does not smell as much as gunk)
brush it on and just using a hose pipe wash it off

cover the distributor cap (where the spark plug leads come out of) with a bag and tape it to stop water getting in..

you dont need to use high pressure on the hose..

when rinsing it down start at the bottom and work the area with a paint brush and work your way to the top (I know you will cover the bottom again)
give it a second coat and this time wash from top down..

warm your engine up before doing this as it will help any water evapourate..

(just warm it 2 mins)

if you want a real super shine once the engine is dry
get some clear engine laquer (Halfords) and spray that over the engine, it will dry to a deep glossy finish and also helps by acting as a water barrier..
