Ive just whipped out the speedo from its plastic casing, i need to add miles onto this speedo to match my old nackered one, anyone got any ideas, i havent got a speedo cable and a drill if thats what people are thinking :lol:


i think vasi did it a couple of weeks back if im not mistaken?

Your instrument is too new for me to offer truly helpful advice as I've never seen a speedo as new as yours. However, you may get lucky on examining your gauge and find my general suggestions may apply. On the old Smiths units you can remove the thrust washer/keepers that retain the odometer wheels on their shaft. That allows you to disassemble the odometer and put it back together with the numbers you want. There is a 27 page PDF available online (written by Anthony Rhodes) that shows how Smiths speedometers work and how to service them. If you decide disassembly is your only option, Google for the PDF file and have a printed copy by your side as you work. Also, take digital pictures at each step as you disassemble the unit. You'll find these invaluable when you put it back together.

Also of no use to you is the bit of information that the Smiths speedometers from the early 1960s had little u-shaped spring pawls to hold each odometer wheel in place until it was time for that wheel to turn. To set the odometer to something new all you had to do was depress those u-springs and set the numbers the way you wanted. Those were the days.

thanks dklawson, again very good advice

these dials are from the late 80's cars here in the UK, theyre made by Nippon Seiki. There is a way to remove the milage spindle but if i do it involves bending the prongs that hold it in and im wondering whether they will bend back to retain the shaft when i put it back...
