Just out of interest, have you actually tried to fit it. By the looks as long as the thread in the geabox end is the same it should just screw in, the main differrence is that the old one allowed you to move the threaded collar out of the way to position the cable into the drive and then bring the collar down and screw it on. The new one has a fixed position collar so you will have to make sure the tip of the cable is correctly position before the collar and gearbox meet.

The sppedo end looks exactly like my 1990 mayfair so sould just push into the rear of the clock and then the plastic collar locks it into place

Could be way off but it looks like it should fit to me.

Edit - just had another look and it seems that the plastic collar on the old one (speedo end) has been broken off, this could be why yhe speedo didn't work as there was nothing to hold it into the back.

The inner cable has snapped on mine, the new cable has a thinner inner cable, altho i havent tried to fit it. Also the white plastic dosent fit through the bulk head (didnt try the other end tho).

Should i try it and see?

my clocks are the two infront of the driver.

You have the new cable for a Nippon set of clocks and your old one is for Smiths clocks... so will not fit

The cable with the white clip fits mine and they're Smiths clocks. Add_Gee - you're right, the white clip wont go through the bulkhead, but you have to start at the clocks and feed the drive end through the bulkhead and into the engine.

It's possible that the old cable you have isn't actually a Mini cable or is perhaps a clubman cable, but they have a wee stalk which clips I thought, perhaps it's broken off? Anyway - I had terrific trouble trying to get one of the new style cables to work with me,but it now does.

Make sure there are as little bends as possible in the cable and lube the life out of the cable inner - I used vaseline lol  Then check that the cable itself is turning when secured in place,by driving a short distance but with the speedo disconnected so you can see the end of the cable.

If you find the needle is jumping ridiculously then you will likely have a bend in the cable,so try and straighten it. If your speedo still doesn't work, it would be time to check your clocks and speedo drive.

PS - Sprite's also have a different cable I'm told, but I searched high and low and those white clip cables are the only ones available.

Thanks for the info, my cable is deffinattly dead, the inner cable has snapped and has dispeared inside.

Will try this cable, but looking at the size it will not fit correctly and just spin. Will see if i can track down a smiths cable too.

cheers

Minispares will have them, and so will Min-its ( Hockley Heath - other side of Solihull )

Cats-mini, the reason you've had difficulty getting your cable to work with smiths clocks is because its designed for the later nippon clocks... and everntually will spin out in the speedo, and fail.. The replacement for smiths clock is the on shown with the grey end.

*edit*, and don't lube the cable, as this will encourage the contamination of dirt ingress and will wear the cable even quick with no lubrication ( same goes for accelerator cables )

You're most likely right guessworks. I'm only going by what will work quickly for me as there are basically no other cables available on the market - even second hand.

I tend not to think of the consequences as long as it works for the time being lol Is engine oil not ok to lube it with? The guy on the phone at "somewhere" mini centre (I rang so many lol) said to lubricate the inner....which made sense as I had had the inner bit out all the time and it was bone dry and stuff. And I only had vaseline.

Do you think the oval ended cable is in danger of wearing away the square hole at speedo drive end?

its a lot easier if you just take out the new inner cable from the new one and put it into your old speedo cable, thats what i did, it will be a little longer but just cut it and sqaure it off!
