The "strange plate" probably won't help if it's what I think it is. Is it about 50mm x 25mm, riveted or welded near the radiator cowl and has only a few numbers beginning with the letter "F"? Those tags were for something on the production floor and have no meaning once the car was shipped. I think a few of the Hornet/Elf web sites have figured ways to use the numbers to track the cars but the VIN tag is what you really need.
Sadly, I can't offer any real help to you. If the car still has its original engine you could contact British Motor Heritage and see if they could track down the VIN number using the engine number. From that point you'd have to contact someone closer to home about how you confirm that you own the car that originally had that VIN and start the process of getting a new VIN tag and all the other necessary re-registration steps.
I don't envy you. Good luck, let us know what happens!

well seeing as you have the old reg number, just pop down the post office and pick up a form so you can apply for a new v5, i think it costs about £20 now for a new v5, but if you are a new owner it may be free.
if you have any doubts, you can phone them up and ask them if the reg nimber you have is still allocated to your pick up, and not been sold on.
