Hello there,

I've been waffling about for a while wanting to get into mini's and also mechanics .. so recently decided to venture out and buy a project, anyhow my garage needs sorting so i decided to buy an engine for starters! Sitting in there at the mo is a 998cc. Got me a haynes manual and wana start getting dirty with it lol. Only thing .. I need to ask is there any specialist equipment I'm gona need cause I dont want to be attempting to strip it and find oop's i shouldnt have done that or should do this ...etc etc...

so any help for a complete novice would most be appreciated!!!

And anything else for that matter.

Don't think you'll need anything especially specialized except a flywheel puller tool, and a fairly large socket for the crankshaft pulley bolt.

You wont need anything to specialised but you will need the basics..

Decent set of combination spanners ( 1/4" thru to 1" ), double up on 7/16" 1/2" and 9/16"

Set of sockets ( 3/8" thru to 1" )

Torque wrench up to 150 lbft
1.1/2" deep ball joint socket ( also used to remove flywheel bolt on pre-verto clutches)
1.5/16" socket for pulley crank bolt
30mm socket for verto crank bolt

Flywheel puller
Big flat head screwdriver or something else to lock the crank
Soft headed mallet
Piston ring compressor

Valve spring compressor if you want to dismantle the head,

when rebuilding you will also need feel guages, and a decent gasket scraper, and a parts washer is useful..
