Righto! Just a quick question people!
What are the visual differences between a 998 A series engine and a 1275 A series. In other words, can the difference be told when opening the bonnet?
Sorry if Im being neive, Im only 16!

Easyest way is to have a look at the engine number, if its a 998 then it will start 99H, if its a 1275 then it will start 12H. Also you can check to see if it has tappet chest covers on the back of the engine. They are rectangular plates around 4" long and 2" high ish, one either side of the back of the engine bolted to the block.
There are other ways, but they are the easiest. Post up a pic and we'll be able to tell you.

The engine number is also a dead giveaway.... ( if it's still there ! )
8H - 850
9H - 998
10H - 1098
12H - 1275
Otherwise the simplest thing to look at, is the head, and the orientation of the thermostat housing bolts... ( the three on the left hand side )
If the front to are parallel to the front of the head, it's a 1275, if at an angle 998...
There will be the rare occasion when a 1275 head is fitted to a 998.

What Im basically trying to get at is... Could I pull off a 1275 as a 998? Obviously not to A series familiar people such as yourself.. but to Mr Joe Insurance Blogs??
Cheers.

I would strongly suggest against it... as its one of the first things they will check in case of an incident... and then you have no insurance and a large legal bill...
Advice is start with a 998, bog standard as very few of the specialist mini insurance companies will insure anyone under 19, so your dealing with the major comps and they don't want to hear the word modified.
