can anybody help me, i have just relised what the switch on the left of the cluster is (a brake test switch). when i press it it lights up red what does this mean? and what exactly does it test? ie
brake pad wear, is it checking front or all round, whether or not they need bleeding?

That switch allows you to see whether the brake failure light works. So you should be able to press it and the light should come on.

so what does that mean if it lights up red?
brake failure light?

Ok, if your brake fluid was to run low, that light on the switch would light up. Now, in order you to to know whether that light works, and to stop the situation of your brakes not working AND the light not working (in which case you would not know that you have no brakes), BMC gave you that switch to test the light. So if its lights up, everything is working correctly. Its when it lights up and you haven't hit the switch is when you should be worried!
