Advice needed (boot panels)

We are trying to rush the mini to get it mot'd as soon as we can.So we thought we would weld the side boot panels on top of the small rust holes instead of cutting it all out properly.Will it pass a mot?Do we fill the holes with filler or do we need to weld a plate underneath? The holes are small and would fill easily with filler.We are doing the left and right side of the boot.We know we should do a proper job but we want to do it quickly.

It's been a long time since I did MOTs (6 years now)! But IIRC you have to repair the area and make sure that the 'patch' is welded fully along all edges.

It depends on the damage really. Have you got any piccies?

Basically, if the rust is within a 30cm radius of any mounting points for safety belts, seats, suspension mounts, subframe mounts, steering mounts (basically anything important structurally) it will have to be repaired with a fully seam welded patch. There are occasions when a car will not fail on rust (even if it has rusted right through) it just depends on what the rusty hole is near to.

If ever in doubt with an MOT I always advise people to go for a test up to a month before the expiry of their last ticket, this way if it passes, great, you will get a back dated ticket for up to 13 months (ie if it expires on the 12th November 2005 and you pass today, your new one will expire on 12th November 2006). If it fails, you have a month to put it right and still have a current ticket.

There is nothing worse than doing a load of work preparing a car for an MOT then missing one little thing and failing.

Yeah cool, PM em to me if ya want.

The only difficulty you have is that alot of this MOT malarky is described as 'to the discretion of the tester' so peoples opinions of what can pass and fail isn't alwlays 100% the same.

But I can offer my opinion on them no probs! :wink:

so if you have 12 months mot and take it for another Mot do you have 24 months mot

Nah, maximum 1 month overlap. I think it was done so that people weren't driving around with cars with no MOT if theirs failed. It allows people to have upto 2 month to fix their motor if it fails too, which I think is a good idea. :smartass:

Actually though, seeing as it was like 6 years ago that I was testing, the rules could have changed???? :)

speaking to the MOT man today

he said you can put the new pannels on top as long as you weld all the way around the out side of the new metal :smartass:

Yep, they would deffo fail if not repaired due to the proximity of the rear bolts on the subby.

As Mr Bungle has said, it you buy the new panels and weld them in place (fully around all edges), it should pass fine. You really should at the very least ensure you cut all of the old rust out before putting the new panel on. This way you will prevent the rust from being trapped under the new panel.

As far as the underneath is concerned, the repair will be visible from underneath and the tester will see it and investigate further in the boot. I would say leave the underside until it has been passed, then I would coat it with a rust proofing primer and underseal it????? But the bodywork gurus would advise better than me about that bit.
