Okay, I'm a girl and have no idea what I'm talking about but here goes.....
My mini broke down on the way to a friends house and we finally got it there going at about 10 miles an hour. Anyway, we called the RAC and he said it was the head gasket so my mini got carried home.
So, we got a friend of a friend to come and fix the head gasket. After that was all completed, we started it up, there was a funny noise and then it just stopped. This guy reckons it's the cam shaft and we'll need a whole new engine.
For my question, is this common, is it repairable or will we need a new engine?? :)
P.S It's all my fellas fault. He's a car killer, always manages to blow the head gasket on his cars..Grrr!

Hmmm, tough one!

It really depends on what the funny noise was, and how bad the damage is.

Will it turn over at all? Ie when you turn the key, does the engine turn, or is there nothing happening at all?

Its possible that when the head gasket was changed something wasn't tightened or put back correctly (pushrods, rockers being the primary suspects) and has broken, causing the damage.

Alternatively it could be something as simple as a wire falling off or a bad earth...

Its very hard to say, is there someone else nearby who could possibly help you diagnose it?

998 engines are cheap and common as chips these days. easier to drop an engine in then rebuild one if its anything more serious then suggested above.
