Mine has just started doing exactly the same thing

It will be fine for maybe half an hour of driving and then suddenly it will hold its revs (as in when I put the clutch down the revs just stay where they were), it also sometimes decided to shoot up to 4000 or 5000 revs and the only way to stop it is turning the ignition off for a few seconds and re starting, then it all goes back to normal.

I don't have a clue where to start with this one :D I have replaced the coil, plugs and leads just to be sure but it is still exactly the same. It's beginning to be a right pain but I use the mini everyday so cant afford to take it off the road for long to sort it out.

Hope someone can find out what might be causing it so we can all live with happy revving minis :D I need to get it sorted before May as it might be a bit of a pain taking it to IMM doing that all the time! :P

Is it holding the revs when the throttle is opened?

for me when it stuck; i then pushed the throttle and it stayed at that point when reöeased. if i gave it a bit more throotle to raise the revs again it stayed there too. This is what led me (and good advice on here) to change the throttle cabel as it may be sticking.

I must say I havent had the cahence to change the cable yet bt after replaceing the engine steadybushes i haventhad the problem. maybe excessive movement of the engine was causing the cable to snag somewhere?!

Yep thats exactly what mine is doing, if you push the throttle down more it sticks to those revs, although sometimes it will move up to 4000 or 5000 on its own without me doing anything which was what made me think it was something with the ECU as well as the fact that when I turn it off and on again quickly the revs go back to normal. I looked at the throttle cable today and it looked a bit worn so might be worth changing just to be safe anyway.

Are you also gettimg an erratic idle? Mine would idle at either 1500 and stay or bounce around under 900

The Idle is Ok but it doesn't change all the time, sometimes it will idle at 900 and sometimes 1500 but doesn't seem to bounce around. I have put a bottle of injection cleaner in the fuel to see if that does anything but hasn't changed yet. I might give up and take it to a garage soon.

As far as the TPS goes, when faulty or erratic it might change the RPM. I had the experience with a Hyundai when driving at constant (mechanical) throttle opening, the speed and RPM varied by themselves. Checked it with a "Scangauge", an OBD2 scanner that displays the TPS opening real time, and it was varying by itself while driving at constant throttle. Then checked it with an Ohmmeter and the resistance values were erratic as the throttle was opened and closed. At some points with the fixed throttle opening the resistance varied by itself.

DustyM,
Appreciate for the input here. At least, I know that someone else also experiences the same problem.

I will definitely check the TPS and will report back soon.

Hope that this will solve the problem. <_<

DustyM and Minisilverbullet,
I have replaced the TPS and the problem has gone away.

You are correct, DustyM. It was the PTS causing the problem.

Agian, appreciate for your help.

If I had seen this thread earlier i would of said throttle position sensor, I have said it loads of timesin other threads, mine did it, the other thing that affected my idle was the purge valve to the right of the block, little black box with a hose connected to it! my tps used to make deceleration rough unless the engine was warm, also under hard acceleration the engine would "flutter" revs would go really wierd! As soon as I started the engine after replacing it you can tell it's better, i didn't buy a new new one, I got an spi throttle body unit of eBay with one attatched for 6 quid I think, just a tip there!
