i have now refilled the oil after replacing the filter and seal and sump plug.

Problem now is that when the car is at idle after first starting it the red oil light doesnt go out??

When i rev the engine it goes out and stays out so is it just not enough oil or is something else?
I have put 4.5 lites in and a bit more from another bottle so roughly five i think.

Cheers

the oil light comes on when the oil filter is empty, this is pretty normal after an oil change as it takes a few moments for it to fill.

as long as the ol dipstick shows a nice reading then all should be ok

4.5l rings a bell, sounds as if all is well mate

Red oil light ???

The oil light on minis are Yellow/amber, the red one is the ignition ( battery charge ) light...

Unless this is another freaky voodoo thing connected with the injection minis...

ok i messed up it is the battery light on the left.DOH!

Right well i did adjust the fan/alternator belt to make it a little tighter so have i over tightened it or what?

Mine is a car model with all the crazy injection wiring and the stupid carbon filterr which means loads of extra pipes all over the engine bay

should be about 10mm of play on the belt. (bottom) if you over tighten you could knacker your water pump bearings causing a lovely high pitch squeel. I did that :nugget:

still doesnt explain why it comes on when i first start the car.

it didnt do it before i moved the alternator to tighten the belt.

Weird!

Any ideas?

quite often you'll get the red light come one when you first start the car as the revs are low, and the alternator hasn't kicked in.
once you rev it a little, the light will go out, and stay out unless the revs drop right low.

on later cars with the clocks in front of the driver the ignition light and the oil light are both read and sit below the fuel/water temp gauges.

if the oil light come on this means that the oil pressure is low, straight after a oil change this is not uncommon as the system needs to be primed and the oil filter refilled, which ona pre mpi car isnt too bad as the oil filter can be filled before attaching to the car, ona mpi that is not possible as it sits on its side.

one thing to go is to crank the car over with the ignition disconnected to buld up the oil pressure (take the plugs out too to aid faster cranking.) but this doesnt always work unless the battery is in top condition and its harder to do on injection cars esp mpis, in which cas just start the car and give the throttle a tiny blip after 2 seconds and then if the oil light doesnt go out turn off and check the oil level etc. then try again

Karl.

Ok i think i might of confused myself and some of you--sorry

There are two lights:

Left hand one is RED
Right hand one is ORANGE

When i first start the car the red light comes on and doesnt go off, until i rev the engine then it goes off and stays off.

It was not doing this before i tightened the fan belt, so I am confused why it is doing it now?

Thats your battery light.

When you turn the ignition on at first it comes on to test the bulb is working. Once the engine is started, it sometimes takes a moment to go out.

As long as its going out I think your pretty safe. Its the light to say the Alternator isnt working. but when its off, it means its working.
