    Starting My Mini Up

I have had my 1997 P-reg 1.3i Mini Cooper for 4 and a half years and I'm trying to work out if I can save it from scrappage. I need to get rid of it because I now have a long commute to work and this is not the tool for the job. Deep down it's a great little car and I think it would be a travisty to scrap it, but if the numbers don't add up I will have no option.

Good bits
38,000 miles
3 owners
Full leather interior vgc with walnut dash
Rare Almond Green with white bonnet stripes and roof
Full electric sunshine roof (black)
Minilites
Maniflow exhaust
Full services history, book might not be stamped but I've got all receipts

Not ideal bits
Roof leaks in extreme rain combined with extreme wind (Started this week and I've not investigated because it won't stop raining, but it may just be a seal)
Rust - it's going on sills, A-panels and around windscreen and headlight seams

I have attached a picture of when I bought it, doesn't quite look as good now now and I'll take more pictures when the rain stops. Imagine 4 years living outside ontop of what you see here.

Do I have any chance of getting £2k for it or am I wasting my time hoping?

Thanks for your help

The "£2k" scrappage discount is very misleading, even with just £1k cash you will probably end up with a better overall deal if you try.

Well, in all honesty you may as well try get as much as you can for it first anyway. Unfortunately the recession has devalued pretty much everything second-hand but you still might get the right buyer at the right time.

As said above you might get 2k off a brand new car but if you bargain hard enough you'd probably manage to get that and more knocked off if you show them you're serious about buying it. That way, you get a cheap new car and you also save a piece of British motoring history!!

I'd say, go try bargain a few grand off a new car first. If you get 2 grand knocked off, then keep the Mini for now and sell it privately in your own time and whatever you get for it is a bonus.

Please don't scrap it :D

as above, be very wary about the scrappage scheme. some very good cars are being scrapped for no reason whatsoever. the required work for yours should not be in excess of £800-£1k and less if you know someone who can fdo it for you. Then you should easily get your money + change back! That will give you easily over £3k to go and spend on a new car. Walk into a showroom with that for a deposit and watch the deal they'll give you, it'll be better than the one they'll give with scrappage any day!

Why not buy a nearly new second hand car be more than 2 grand less than the price brand new and you still have the mini to do with as you please.
Also with buying a second hand car you won't loose as much when you come to sell it again.

yeah, you'll buy your brand new car and as soon as you drive it off the forecourt it's probably dropped £2k in value as it is now second hand.

Just sell it. My mate is a salesman for a large dealer and he told me the scrappage is really only 1K so as long as you go with at least that you will get the same or better deal plus you keep a mini on the road.

My Dad bought a new car about a month ago, got 4k off the price by just saying another dealer was knocking 2.5k off the price when he hadn't even been to the other place. Just make sure you go near the end of the month when dealers are desperate to make their quota and be prepared to BS your way to money off. It's like insurance, you ring them up they say have you had a quote somewhere else and you say yes and just make something up that you would be willing to pay.

Don't scrap another mini

I agree with above about a brand new car they will come down with a bit of bull a private sale would be worth more for you and the new car even around £1500 cash for the shop deal
