My 1981 998cc clubman estate has a random cutting out problem. I've replaced the condenser and the points look good as new.
I can leave it for ages ticking over and its fine (most of the time, some times it cuts out). But when driving, it cuts out after a mile and refuses to start. Its then a tow home (
If I'm lucky, it might start and I end up having to give it some choke (although the engine is warm) to keep it running. The throttle seems to just make it die without the choke.
Though I just managed to recreate the problem I think. I had the car warmed up and gave it some choke. It ran faster but when I put the choke back in, the engine went slower and slower till it cut out. But this does not happen every time I do this.
I've also found that if I pull the choke and put it back in but the engine keeps running, the engine revs do not return to a fast tickover rather than normal.
Do I have a carb in need of refurb or cleaning? Or could it be say, fuel pump or fuel filter (if there is one)?
If it is the carb, would some of that carb cleaning spray be any use?
Thanks in advance.

I cannot see one and the haynes manual seems to show that its only the injection models that have a fuel filter.
