i am about to fit a 1990 mg engine to my 1985 mini, but where the heater tap goes onto the head the hole is blocked off is it a case of simply drilling a hole to allow water to flow.

Yes you can drill the head for the heater tap. The stud holes already have the threads tapped. So you can bolt the heater valve straight on.
