Went to start the 1425 to get back to work at lunch and I hear this metallic 'clincking' from the rad end of the engine. Tried to listen up close and I can only narrow it down to coming from the fan, the water pump, possibly the timing chain or maybe even the alternator (my engine is quite loud so trying to focus on little noises is quite hard!).

Does anyone know what this could be? At first I thought the fan was hitting on something but I've looked all around and can't see anywhere where it is hitting. the fan belt is tight.

One thing I think I should mention is that for the past couple of months my battery warning light stays on, glower brighter the more I rev the engine. Now I was told this was the alternator on its way out, however, I have 12v on my battery, 14v with the engine on, and about 8-9 when starting the engine, so I ruled this out and just ignored it as a bad connection or something. Could this be related??

could be a breaing in the alternator, what I'd do is take the fan belt off and then start the car... you'll soon find out if the clicking has anything to do with the bits which are no longer rotating

Ooooh, good idea!! See, all these common sense ideas, anyone could think of them but its always you!! Will do that, and, if neccessary I'll nab the alternator from the clubby!!

Could it be that the alternator belt is perhaps too tight?
