I guess your on about the outer joint?

Firstly take the wheel off and take the split pin out of the castle nut on the centre of the hub. Put the wheel back on, put the car in gear and pull the handbreak up tight, then try and undo the castle nut, but not fully!!

Take the wheel back off and undo it the rest of the way. Split the top and bottom ball joints and the steerin joint too, then the hub should come off. Support it on something so it doesnt hang on the brake pipe.

Undo the cable tie that holds the CV boot to the CV (on the fat end of the boot). The next bit is sometimes easier with an assistant. You need to hold the drive shaft and with a mallet knock the CV off the drive shaft. It's held in by a cir-clip so make take a bit of doin and some colourful language.

Once off, check that the cir-clip is ok and still on the end of the drive shaft, it should be quite loose, but not loose enough to fall off.

Clean all the splines so there is no C**p in the grooves. Slide the new CV on the drive shaft and tap it home with a mallet, be careful not to damage the threads on the ind tho. Once on it should no come off by pulling on it and there should be no splines showing on the drive shaft.

Clean out the old CV boot if your gonna re-use it and fill it with new CV grease and fit back to the CV and cable tie it back up.

Slide the hub back on the CV, then re-attach the ball joints and steering joint and tighten them all up. Before you put the castle nut back on, make sure the taper washer is in the hub, its a big chunky thing, so you cant miss it, then wind the nut on. When its tight put the wheel back on and lower the car back down and tighted the castle nut up as tight as you can. Check to see if the grooves in the nut line up with the split pin hole on the CV, if they dont DON'T LOOSEN THE NUT till they do, TIGHTEN IT A BIT MORE till they do, then put the split pin back in and bend it over.

Check everything is tight and working ok and the jobs a good-un. It sounds a big job, but shouldnt take long to do, the hardest bit is sometimes getting the old CV off the drive shaft, but it will come with some persuation.

Good luck...

Excellent advice and instruction, the only thing I would say is that most people would recommend using a new split pin for the castellated nut when you've finished as lots of re-bending of the old one will weaken it.

Also you may have trouble splitting the ball joints if they haven't been touched for years. A ball-joint splitting tool is a must for this as you may need to put a lot of force into an old joint before it will split.
