im curious about putting exhaust wrap on mine as when i worked on a formula renault the exhaust wrap caught fire and had to be extinguished... makes me wonder whether the same will happen to my little mini :withstupid:.

the wrap shouldnt catch fire unless oil has been spilled on it, as its made from glass fibre. ive had my wrap glowing red without fire!

That wrap soaks up liquids and vapours very well so if it is soaking up fuel and oil vapours it could catch fire!!

My R1 had the same wrap and was ok when using it on a regular basis but it i left it stood for any time, next time i started it loads of smoke would be coming off the wrap for about 15 minutes and it stinks!!

Thanks for the info...

dont understand how it went up as there isnt really anything directly around the exhaust that could have got onto it to ignite... odd

whats the general consensus on a road car, is it worth having it or not?

I couldn't understand what/how it was getting onto mine either but there was definitely stuff burning off.

I think it is very useful to keep down underbonnet temps and also when you are working on the engine, you dont have to wait for ages for the manifold to cool down! :withstupid:

the main reason i need it, is to reduce the heat in the engine bay, most people use it for performance as the engine goes better if the heat is kept in the exhaust

I had some on my Sunbeam Lotus which was used very infrequently. Don't seem to remember anything ever burning off it - and I had a vented bonnet. The wrap seemed to drop the underbonnet temperature quite a bit.

Will have to keep an eye on the mini as that is wrapped too!

the wrap only smokes a little when you first start the car for the first time, but if you spill oil on it, then it will burn, the wrap acts like a wick from an oil lamp!!

I've got the DEI Titanium on mine, you dont need to wet it to wrap it, dont need to wear gloves as its not glass fibre, didnt smoke when first heated, looks great (IMO - see my build thread). I am using it more to reduce engine bay temps than aid exhaust scavenging, hence why I wrapped two header pipes at once.

If money no issue then go for ceramic coating - defo the best way.....
