iv been told that my engine is a 1275 cooper s. is there any way to check this? from what i know the cooper s has no removable cover for the tappets but im not sure if that is true. i think iv got the wrong carb too, i think its from a 998cc which is making my car run poo. Whoever had the car before my has put the 1275 in it, but i dont know anything about it, like year ect. how do you find these things out? any help would make my life alot easier. thanks

Have you got the engine number (should be stamped on a plate located to the right hand side of the engine (towards the front of the Mini))?

Not sure what the difference was between the Cooper and the Cooper S (unless the S featured the Works pack? - anyone confirm this?)

The S engine has an additional bolt(not stud) in the head.

Engine number is the info required, 1275 engines start with 12, 998 engine numbers start 99, 850's start 85.

What age is the car?

No tappet chests... not an S.... well not a real one anyway...

Apparently some mk3 S engines we solid blocks, but personally that just makes it a 1300GT engine which are still good, but dont have the same 'kudos' as a proper S engine....

Re the engine number, if it starts with a 12 then it is DEFINITELY NOT AN S ENGINE, S engines had their own bespoke engine numbers which did not follow the 8/9/10/12 cc prefix rule.

Finally, if it's an A+ block, no point even going any further. must be an A series..

Just had a look through your other posts, as you have a 91 Neon, I'd put money on it being an A+ block...

So, MPi Cooper Sports aren't really "Cooper S" cars??? Confused here. I have a '98 Cooper Sport engine and it is a 12A 2L K70.

No... They are Cooper Sports.... not Cooper S

The nearset thing you'll get to a cooper S engine in a 'later' mini are those which have a JCW conversion, and even then it's just a beefed up metro engine...

"Real" cooper S engines stopped being made in 1971

there were a few (very early) clubman 1275 GTs had a 11 stud cooper S blocks (8-10) as these were the last S engines left over on the production line and were fitted in the clubman.......

to check if yours is a S block you will need to check crank for an EN40B crank, block will have 11 stud holes and tappet chest covers and a non drilled petrol pump with a Ally plate with 1275 raised stamped on it rivitet to pump position with a engine NO: rivet................... :D

Not to sound dumb but what does the "S" stand for in Cooper S then? Minis can be sooooo confusing cause there is a model for everything, I'm surprised they didn't have the "Sir Alec Birthday edition Mini". Anyhow, I checked on the Austin/Rover site and it says my "Cooper S" engine puts out 77BHP stock. Austin Rover

That's the thing, the "S" in Cooper S doesn't stand for anything.... or rather nothing which can be decided upon... or proven.

As you say, yours is a Cooper Sport Mpi, although pushing out a similar power to the original spec 1275 cooper S engine, mechanically it's a different bestie altogether.

the S stands for special. Read the History of the Mini, Making of a modern Icon and it tells you :dontgetit:
