that my friend, is a capacitor, i think its from maplins, it'll be a one farad one :dontgetit:

I understand you need these for the more powerful systems. How exactly do they work?

It builds a charge from the amp, and when the base note kicks, dumps all its power into the driver = Bigger boom for your buck.

Interesting. I've only just fitted twin 8" subs in the Mini so getting more power might be a while off.

the cap smooths out and unstableness from the battery while the engine is running... as the battery cant react quick enuff to the constant quick drawing of power that you bass amp applys to it.

its worth getting one as they are cheap (£30) just to keep your system nice and stable...:(

As rich said, it holds a charge (basically what all capacitors do) And when for example a heavy bass note hits, it releases its charge as the power is needed in the drivers (subwoofers), so that you get the power needed momentarily, and it doesnt put too much of a strain on the amplifier :(

Not really needed in all fairness unless you have a very power demanding system installed

..kinda, but more a case of when the heavy note does hit the amp needs (briefly) alot of energy (amperes) and the battery cant supply it quick enuff, the cap has a much quicker reaction time so will disipate the energy needed faster so that the amp gets what it needs when it needs it so that the amp isnt under powered when it plays that note... and we all know what an under powered speaker sounds like!

and remember place the cap as close to the amp as possible... like rite next to it with really short wire runs...

it not absolutly needed but the bigger the system the more its needed... get one anyway for when u do want to upgrade..:(

caps hurt your charging system more then they do good, its better to get a higher output alternator as the stock mini alts don't put out much,
and as you add amplifier to make the music louder, it takes more battery power to keep up with your stereo's needs, as caps help in that forum,
but they put more stress because when the amplifier needs that extra bit of volts, it discharges, and now the battery/alternator have to keep playing
the loud music and recharge the cap at the sametime

plus most car audio amplifiers are made to make their power at 14.4volts as most mini alts don't put out that voltage, so your amplifier will never see
the voltage it needs to make its watts, unless you get one of those special amplifiers that makes its watts at 12v's but your gonna pay for it

the cap is like a band aid for a cut, the bigger the amplifier, the bigger the cut, and soon the band aid isn't gonna work well
