It is a nightmare trying to find out what disk brake setups people have used in the past for mini's and other kitcars, just wondered if anyone knew of any decent rear brake arrangements, i would prefer the caliper to already have a mechanical handbrake to save investing in a little single pot one.

ive heard of a few setups that are used, including golf mk2+3/polo setups, sierra calipers being used etc.... Does anybody know what rear calipers and disks are used on the zcars kit !?!

Any help would be fantastic !

Sean

Have you decided not to use the inboard arrangement you were planning for then?

Not got much to add with regard to your question though sorry, as I think I'll be on wilwoods..

Having said that though, deendent on piston diameter matching etc, those yaris ones from the thread above do look neat enough - if the cable run can be sorted. Maybe a bit heavy though being cast...

the yaris/clio setup does look pretty smart and should do the job nicely ! well i am still undecided about inboard or not, if i could find a setup cheap enough to use outboard i will but i might just have the urge to stuff the outboard method and bite the bullet an fabricate some brackets for inboard !!

Z cars use Sierra calipers, I think a fiesta disc redrilled to suit the mini pcd or at least they used to, not sure if things have changed.
It's possible using a limited range of 13" wheels to fit the entire standard sierra disc setup which is what I have done

I've watched and read with interest a lot of the recent 'rear disks' threads, its usually about now that a bunch of people will come along tutting and shaking their heads because these simple and clever solutions are deemed 'too heavy' or 'too strong' for a mini's needs.

I'm waiting for the ' you only need disks from an airfix model and calipers off an under 3's tricylce, because the back of a mini floats away if you dont carry bricks ' response.

I'm very very impressed with the clio / toymotor solution and is making me re-consider my Mk2 golf ideas. :)

david, cheers for the info on the zcars set up, i thought they looked like sierra calipers, i think possibly from the xr4x4, xr4i or cossey models but very usefull to know what disk they used to! cheers mate. Do you recon they just made up there own backing plate for it ?

roofless i did take a look at the mk2 golf route to and seemed a good viable option, but like you say the clio/yaris combo looks a gooden:thumbsup: however so does the sierra/fiesta arrangement, afterall it has been tried and tested many a time on the zcars kit.

i would still like to go inboard ideally as i think it would look a little different and be quite a nice touch, however i think going that route could wind up being expensive (having to buy a single pot handbrake of some sort). hmmmmm will have to see what sort of money i can save up.

cheers for all the help lads

They are indeed from the higher end sierra, most of the lower spec sierras use drums. When you say backing plate do you mean the hub/bearing assembly? It is the standard sierra bearing carrier machined to remove the bolted area including disc mount, then this is welded to there trailing arm and custom brake caliper mounts welded to that to suit the smaller diameter fiesta escort discs used. There are many variations using drum hubs etc and using disc brake outer assembly and lately I believe they use Mondeo stuff, point is whatever they use is not a nut and bolt solution it requires modifications

Cheers

I had a topic about rear disc conversion a couple of weeks ago in the Problems & Technical section. I must admit I really like the look of that yarris/clio conversion and I wonder whether it could be made to fit under 10's

Does anyone know which model yarris has rear discs?

Luke.

I've been looking at either buying a pair of these or making my own plates to insert between the pistons and pads with a cable attachment for the handbrake. I've seen this done on a kitcar and it doesn't look that complicted. Coupled with some suitable discs I think it could work.
