" I would use a GPR body(no rust and lightweight) with a VW 1.4TSI engine. Normall flash of the ecu will give 220hp with lots of torque down low. No expensive stand alone ecu needed and rotrex/turbo conversion. There is even a 1.4TSI with 7-speed DSG transmission, full automatic or with flappypaddles. In Holland you can also get a Powercontrol thats limits the torque in every gear for maximum grip and a DSG tuning that speeds up the gearchange."

Is this really possible? I've read Chris was playing around with some VW/Audi engines. Would this be a new possibility? What other similar engines would you suggest? Would the electrics be a pain?

This is probably the most I can think of

The VW 1.4 comes in two version, the first with compressor and turbo, the second only with turbo. That is the one to pick. The electrics comes with the ecu. You have to buy the whole packadge. The other VWengine that would be usefull is the 1.8 20VT. That engine is very strong. Lots of parts and with another turbo(plug and play) + ecu flash you will have 300hp and 440NM. That engine is used in Audi TT, Seat Leon1, Vw Golf 1.8T etc. Weight of the engine is 125kg. Which in my opinion is to much for a Mini, just like al carengines. The only engine I would use is a 2008> Hayabusa, I got a brandnew 2009 in the garage  with a full electric flatshifter!!

Hayabusa incl box versus car engine+box is almost 100kg lighter.

I love the VW 1.8T engine. Its great engine! A rear wheel drive mini with that engine would be great! I have drive a golf, Octovia and a Leon with that engine.

In my opinion I reckon Zcars Mini with VTEC (or new Volvo kit), in Minus shell - no rust to deal with, with a roof rack when you want to cart a tent around if thats important. Although if youve got that kind of funds then Im sure you could build a Zcars Mini on a brand new shell, about £3500, and get it all protected/waxoyled etc before you start and then theres no reason why it should rust any more than any other modern car.

And if you still dont like the idea of a Mini and youve got 20k to spend why are you not considering a Cerbera? (Sorry Mini fans) Fibreflass body so no rust, and as quick as your are going to get with that money. With a boot (albeit a small one!) better than an Elise.

When I finish my RWD mini/MGTF build I plan on doing a 3000 mile "rally" around europe lasting 7 days in it.. As for weather I should, well probs not but hey, thats part of the fun taking on the "expensive cars" although I will be fitting a decent exhaust so I don't go deaf. I could take the Audi but there's no fun in it really. The mini's kinda special in that way where as the lotus isn't I believe.

I'm lucky as I have space above the engine and under the bonnet for luggage but I won't be taking much though. Zcars don't have this though I'm pretty sure.

I'd personally choose the mini due to it being different.

Worried about space?

Then put the Vtec conversion in a Mini pickup, Van or Clubman Estate?
