I've been looking on eBay to get a spare ECU that I can keep for my 1996 spi mini. They often quote numbers etc and I'm a little nervous getting anything that might not be compatible. What should I be aware of when look to get a spare??

MNE101150 coded non Cooper
MNE101170 coded Cooper
MNE101050 uncoded non Cooper
MNE101070 undoded Cooper

Those are the most common (single plug) and its not a finite list, there are others.

if you are looking for a spare its only a matter of looking at the numbes on the ECU you have. However, if it is a coded unit, ideally you need the alarm box and fob that goes with it. There is the option to have the alarm and ECU recoded by a specialist, but that will be for a cost and its not exactly a straight swap if that is what needs to be done. The uncoded ECU will work where a coded ECU was fitted and the alarm/ first stage imobiliser will still function
