looking at mocal coolers, basically i know on most tuned/modded engines that used at high revs alot at long periods they are recommended (esp on trackdays).
is it a good idea to fit one to a mini? specifically one with a thermostatically controlled flow?

Personally I dont belive that they are needed. At most if not all track days engines are not used at high revs for long periods.

They look good, but on a road car dont really get needed because the oil doesnt get hot enuf to need cooling.

i,ve got to agree with siggy and bluemini on this one, for practicality and what it does it's not worth it, unless you are racing your car from dawn until dusk that is!
but if you do don't go for the thermostatically controlled one, otherwise it will prob just be sitting there doing nothing!

If you do fit one you MUST fit one with a stat, if not the oil will run way too cool, which is probably worse than too hot.
I ran one (for a very short time) on my old Group N Favroit and that never got warm except once on a 27 mile stage in Kildier (sp?) forest
