Testing alternator off the engine?

I have an alternator lying around, and was told its a good one. Can I check it without installing it?

Only with an Auto electricians alternator test rig

so simply turning it over by hand wont produce a voltage reading?

For an alternator to produce power you need to have 12 volts going into it. It uses the ignition warning lamp for this.
