Righto ladies and gentlemen.

As I should be recieving mk Mk1 bonnet from minimadjonesy tomorrow I was hoping someone could help me.

Am I right in thinking the Mk1 bonnet is the same shape as all mini's (Mk3/4's) and therefore should fit in the hole???

But, I know the hinges arnt right, anyone got some advice on making them fit/ making some hinges?

Cheers!

the type of hinges will depend on the shell you have... MK1/2 bonnets are hinged further in off the bulkhead, unlike the MK3's on which are wider...

But it should be easy enough to modify some hinges to make them work?

And Im right in thinking the shape of the bonnet is the same as later cars, so will fit in the hole?

My cars a 1982 Mk4

As a Mk1 owner I have to ask "why"? Certainly there are a lot of Mk3 and later bonnets out there in the U.K. that don't require special fixes. There aren't a lot of original Mk1 bonnets in the U.S. for those of us who need them.

I'm sure there are methods to fit the later bonnets to early cars. As I mentioned, there are more late bonnets than early so this swap was necessary over here until people started reproducing Mk1 bonnets. I don't know what's necessary going the other direction.

I think I'll have to ask why as well!

It won't be too easy. The bonnet is the same shape and will fit the hole but I don't think there's metal in the right place to weld the hinge mounting points to without marking the skin, although you might be lucky and find that there is.

If you wanted to do it the other way around it would be easy as Minispares make adapter brackets!

Got my mk1 bonnet from PLMini's and it fits all mk's with 4 hinge brackets underneath.

I agree with the comment about mk1 bits been rare. Cost £40 for a brand new mk1 style bonnet for a mk3 on.

So your saying I should leave all the mk1 spares for other people  ?

Why? As long as its being used and not skipped, the better.

Cheers for the help and advice though.

You must do what you need to do.

What I'm saying is that with all the Mk3 and later bonnets at your disposal, you would be depleting a limited resource when proper parts (that won't require special fixes) are available to you... probably at less cost as well.

This is obviously an exaggeration, but it's like you're buying a pearl with the intention of drilling a hole through it and painting it red so you can match a glass bead on a necklace.

Dude, if you want the MK1 look why not just cut the lip off a later bonnet? i did it on my 92 cooper and it looks spot on....
