engine numbers

:thumbsup: can any one help me wih an engine number it has been in my garage fo a few years now and i have forgot where it came from the engine number is 12HA61AA and the gear box number is A/BZ4 BC&M DAM2886

Yeah, BMC dropped the H for high and L for low thing many decades ago!

out of interest, what was the difference between the high and low compression factory engines? Is it the combustion chamber capacity in the head that differs or is it the piston shape?

Pistons, usually the pin to crown height.. ...

This can be shown by comparing a set of 21253 and 21251 heapolite pistons,
