I'm in the middle of changing my water pump (I thought it was this that was causing a metalic clingking sound) but when I went to take the altenator off I noticed that the bolt that bolts to the positioning bracket and the alternator was missing, as a result the only thing that was keeping the fan belt tight was the two top altenator bolts. I've inspected my alternator and the pulley that the fan belt sits on can move a cm or so in and out of the alternator, now I've checked both my other alternators and they don't do this so I guess mine is fubar'd, yes?!

If so, can I use either of the other two alternators I have in my garage?! They aren't the same model however?

I'll have a look at connections, it appears to be the whole shaft that is moving?
