Hi all,
I am now the proud owner of 1994 1.3i mini.
When I change gears there seems to be a lot of slack in the takeup and a loud thunk. If I ride the clutch it seems to be ok.
Being new to Mini's, what should I look at. Is it likely to be a worn engine or gearbox mount or something more sinister.
Is this a common or known issue.
Thanks,
David

I'd go for engine steady to start with, then look at the mounts.. .for there the be any slack in the box you would know about it and if it is then could be wear in the diff planet gears amd output shafts... but mounts first

Thanks,
I think I'll try the steady. I don't imagine it will be gearbox related as has only done 80,000km's.

or 50K miles which is no short distance for a mini gearbox... average is about 70k (110k km) for a box out of a well maintained regularily serviced engine...

Sorry to butt in...so an 87k gearbox with no previous attention is likely to need a rebuild to get it all tight again?
I printed off your rebuild price sheet - looks good fella

Not always the case, but more probably than not, the telltale of wear in an a box is the condition of the 2nd synchro baulk ring ( chrunches when changing 3rd to 2nd ), if the box is already out wobble the end of the drive shafts, if there is an appreciable amount of moevement this will show that the mica thrust washers on the end of the output shafts are worn out which again will indicate that the diff pin is worn...
