Two most common problems for disappearing fuel would be a leaky tank in which case fuel will collect in the boot which will stink, check under spare wheel for fuel and be very careful of sparks. If you find fuel here don't even think of going near the battery until you've got rid of all the fuel (soak it in rags and leave them to evaporate off or trap it in a flash can if you have one, don't burn it off and do all this in a well ventilated area) and ventilated the boot for a good long time to get rid of the vapour. Or otherwise it could be a broken fuel pump delivering fuel into the sump. Check the oil and if it seems thin and gritty then your fuel is in there. DON'T RUN THE CAR WITH FUEL IN THE SUMP. The gearbox makes a pretty good bomb in this condition and it's no good for the health of the engine either. Change and flush the oil and buy a new pump.

After that check that all the rubber peices of fuel line are in good condition. These connect the tank to the under floor fuel line, the fuel line to the pump, the pump to the short fuel line and finally to the carb. Or it could be a broken steel fuel line. That's pretty much the order to check things in though.

Unless your car is injection, that's a whole different matter.

BE VERY CAREFUL WITH FUEL. Have a fire extinguisher with you.
