Ive noticed somthing on my car today... the water pump pully looks like its drunk. When its spinning the pully moves from side to side (as if its bent) Ive checked the pully before i put it on and it is flat and no problems with it at all. Could this mean that there is a problem with my water pump itself or is it nothing to worry about?

Cheers

could be a shot water pump? I'd take the belt off and see if there is any play in the pump.

Or it could be that the pulley hasn't gone on flat. When you put the pulley on did you tighten the bolts one at a time? :erm: Can you be sure it went on square???

Or maybe the bolts are just loose?

Yes i tightened them up one at a time and they are all tight. The pump is not making any noises at all and there is no play that i could tell. I may do a film tomorrow night so i can show it in action.

It could be a buckled pulley then? But you say it looked square, is there any endfloat in the pump? As in, if you try to pull the pulley out towards the radiator does it move at all?

Film would be good :w00t:

Common problem with the pressed steel type. I have three and two are also wobbly. If you can get hold of one use the original cast Cooper S one. Thinking about it you have the smaller pulley on the 998 so this option is not and option :nugget:

You'll need to find the high point on the run out and hit it with a soft faced mallet taking care not to deform the V groove.

Best option would be a new one but I don't think there available any more

Edit

They are still available byt are like 40 notes :saywhat: :w00t:

Thats not good, I dont think its the pully, i couldnt see anything wrong with it and it looked flat. Will it do any damage being like it is?

They look flat and straight but the only way to realy tell is fit it to the pump and spin it round and usind a makeshift pointer lined up close to the outer diameter edge and measure how much its out. then mark it at the point you need to strike :nugget: Its a bit like truing up a bicycle wheel.

If you leave it like this then it may well cause the bearings in the pump to fail sooner than thier expected life, but funnier things have happened on minis. Excess vibration at higher RPM may result and loosen the bolts, dunno :w00t:

Straighten it as best you can. They are only pressed steel and do bend quite easily if force is applied in the right place. It may well be distorted in all three axis and a straighter replacement may well be the better option, though like me it might take a few attempts to get a decent one second hand and with new ones costing 40 beer vouchers, its a bum situation. Me being the perfectionist I am, will tell you to replace it, but no doubt some one will contradict me in any case.

There is no substitute for new, except when you don't have the purchase tokens
