I have an alloy inlet manifold with a cone filter on a 998 and
have trouble removing it due to lack of clearance with bulkhead.
Could I remove the spacer on the cable plate without affecting
performance.

I doubt it would even fit - as the spacers are usually fitted for a reason
Easy option, it to remove the bulkhead blanking plate from the inside to get extra space if you still need it - then "mould" the bulkhead blank with a large hammer  works every time!

why not remove the actual filter and then just replace it when you have bolted the carb to the engine? thats what i do; just the filter and the front bit with k&n stamped into it mind you, not the complete the base plate.

What i did was remove the entire carb from the manifold by removing the bolt which goes into the manifold. I did a double nut on the end and tightened it up that way to. Didnt want to go bashing my bulkhead.
