It seems the most feasible diesel for the Mini would be the old Daihatsu engines. That said, am intrigued by whether a 40-54 hp 799cc 3-cylinder Smart Cdi (aka Mercedes OM660) could be made to fit into a Mini since it can be tuned up to 65+ hp or more ambitiously even a 1.5 Renault K-Type dCi?

Apparently Renault also looked at a dCi diesel version of the 1149cc D-Type engine (possibly for the Twingo), until it was ditched in favour of the K-Type dCi.

Alot of effort for something the same power as a healthy A series?

No need to worry about the imminent poo pooing of diesels either as the cars a classic and exempt from most emission controls.
