Another rule of thumb with regards to hearing damage is if the background niose is such that you can't hold a normal converation at a distance of 1 meter then you should be wearing hearing protection.
Cheap makes do break but aslong as you have a reciept you can get a replacement if its within 12months. I went through 3 electric drills whislt building my westy admittedley if i had spent more they probably wouldn't have broke but i think i got my £7.99's worth out of woolworths :grin:

Kada1980, that Seven in your avatar... is it a Lotus, Catherham, or other? It looks really nice. I'll have one some day when the kids are gone.
My wife works for the State in a safety related position. One of their rules of thumb is that if you can't hear it when you snap your fingers with your arm held out horizontally to the side... you need hearing protection.
Yes, cheap tools have their place. However, I've grown VERY tired of having tools break when I need them most. I have a drill that I have to lube EVERY time I plan to use it. The additional time and headache isn't worth it to me any more. Again, you're right... inexpensive tools have their place as long as you're aware of what you're buying.

my angle grinder cost me 20 quid n came with a bunch of discs to do the job. but like someone mentioned its best to get plenty of protection. coveralls, etc just to be safe.

And much much cheaper :grin: :grin: which we like, with plenty more choice of engine and spec.
Funny i mention that cheap tools have there place my drill packed up today :grin: :grin:

Don't buy blackspur cutting discs, you use a disc per cut. I will stick to machine mart (my second home)in future.

I have cut the floors out of two minis plus the boot floor and much more with a thin diamond disk I got from screwfix I am stunned it still works like new and cuts neat and quick, I think it cost around £10.
