I have lost my Haynes manual, new one on way .....

I have hydrolastic suspension and need to get the engine out - Is it possible to lower the suspension without having a Hydrolsatic pump ? If so how ? and do I need to do this so I can get the drive shafts out ? (am pretty sure I do)

Any help greatfully received, its been ten years since I worked on a Mini and have been getting on fine so far but this has stumped me. Roll on getting the haynes manual delivered ...

Thank you

Dan

What do you need to touch the hydro for ??

Unless you are removing the subframe of course...

HI dan

you need to remove the hub in order to pop out the drive shafts, its best to drain all the oil of off the enine first...
then you can take the pot joints straight out of the gearbox.

Cheers for the replies.

One side is still up and the other is down - I havent worked on a car with hydrolastic suspension so was a little confused. To put you in the picture the whole car will be getting stripped for a full rebuild, subframes the lot - but at the moment first job is getting the engine out.

The side where the suspension is down and wasnt a problem have knocked the ball joint out and getting ready to remove the drive shaft - was just worried about the pressure in the other side - I will have another look tonight.

Cowboy am in Andover

When i take the subframes off will I need a Hydro pump ? I know I will when I put it all back together but that could be a while yet and havent sourced a pump yet.

Cheers

Dan

You can release the pressure without a pump. The valves are on the rear subframe, under the valence. There is one for each side. Be careful when releasing the fluid as the pressure is really quite high and so initially when the valves are released there will be quite a surge of fluid. Make sure the car is not on it's wheels when you release the pressure or it will fall down, also if the weight is on the suspension the pressure will be higher. The fluid is not dangerous (it's water with a little alcohol added to stop it freezing) so don't worry about it, just try to catch it in a bowl or something and be careful when releasing the pressure and wear gloves and glasses.

You will as you know need the right pump to repressurize it. You can't really try to adapt another type of pump as the process is quite complex. You need to pump all the air out of the system first and then pump the fluid in without allowing air back in first, so the pump has complex valves and things in it.

Be really careful not to damage your displacers too, they are not available from anywhere really and any that you do track down will have been on the shelf for about 30 years. They haven't been manufactured for ages.
