ok thanks alot i just wondered as i had been looking at pug 306 d turbos before as they are in group 5 insurance aswell and with a few simple mods can get a 0-60 of 5-6 seconds however a mini is definetly cooler (when its working)

i would check you sources very carefully.

you may be able to get these 0-60 times from a 306 gti-6, but not from a d-turbo.

sorry to drift away from minis but you can get these times the stock car is about 10-12 seconds and by increasing the turbo boost getting a hdi gear box and fitting a front mounted intercooler you get around 160bhp i didnt believe it a first but have looked on a pug306 forum and seen videos as proof

reading through, it says your after a first motor, so you must be quite young, so insurance will be a very big problem on any car you get, even a mini nowadays so i'd do a bit of research into it, ring round a few companies and see what you come up with, a pug 306td might be griup 5 but soon as you touch the engine or mod it in any way, it dont matter what group it is, they will charge you huge prices plus alot of places probably wont insure you.

being young (23) i done a silly thing and bought a modded car first time round, after stupid insurance prices and big bills on petrol i bought a mini, only a 998 but i loved it, best choice i ever made and i aint looked back, stick with a mini, you might not win with straight line speed but nothing will catch you round corners

yeah im only 17 and recently passed i know insurance is expensive and will not modify my car for a least the first few years however i probably will modify when my insurance goes down a bit so was looking for a cheap car to start that also has a bit of potential

well a pug will probably not even last another few years and also by that time would be worth nothing so not worth modding, also not great car when that made it lol. i'd say go with a mini because its cheap run and insure and if you keep it in the same condition no doubt you wont lose any cash on it if you decided to resell later on. dont get me wrong nothing wrong with other modded motors and when a little older insurance aint too bad either, i also own a escort rs turbo van alongside my mini's, its quick and turns heads but it costs a fortune to keep on the road, does about 15-20mpg and it being nearly 20 years old i've had to do a bit of work on it, whatever you choose i wish you luck, have fun

You'd be better buying a 15 year old + Mini, then it's classed as a classic and the insurance is MUCH cheap. I pay £500 to insure my MPi (no no-claims on it as it's a third car), my previous car was a kit car with over 300 bhp and only 750kg, it cost me under £200 a year to insure agreed value (14k) as it's specialist insurance.

ok thanks alot was just after a rough 0-60 time also does anyone do ecu remaps or are they hard to do?

When you say your looking for 0-60 times are you looking for a car that feels fast or is actually fast? quite often the two don't go hand in hand!
I've been in a 160bhp v-tec mini and it was undeniably fast (about 5 or so seconds to 60) but it didn't FEEL as fast as my 100bhp 1380. Nowhere near infact. It was all revs no grunt. Again i've driven a clio 182 cup, new mini cooper S, both felt pretty (clio much more so due to lower gearing) but not feelin as fast as the speedo was saying and not half as much fun as my mini because you had to be doing insane speeds to a) feel like you wee going fast, and b) have fun in the corners. Basically they're too fast and planted for they're own good to be much fun without taking the ******* on the road.......of course if you took them to a track that would be a different story.....!
My tuned mini thou with very mild cam/mg metro head etc puts out just over 60 bhp but boy is it fun! pulls hard from nothing to nearly 7k and FEELS quick. I've got a video on my phone of it ******* over my mates dturbo too! Did it regularly ! All this with a 3.1 diff and sportpack wheels meaning it cruises easily at 80mph too.
If your after rough 0-60 times for a tuned mpi though your'e lookin at around the 10 second mark depending how good it is. They are about 12 as standard.
And even 12 seconds in a mini will be more entertaining than 9 seconds in a more modern car.
Basically in the real world you'd be surprised at how little difference 0-60 makes given anything other than a straight road. Just check out mighty minis versus much 'faster' stuff on track days!
Anyway i'm babbling now i'm sure you get where i'm at. :tumble:
