Hi, the engine in my cooper 1991 carb was staying too cold in the mornings and it was over heating in the summer, even though i had a new radiator, heater matrix, thermostat and water pump. This weekend i decided to use a 2 part radiator cleaner to flush through the engine. I flushed it through 6 times in total and every time the water came out like red oxide paint! Anyway, all back together now and getting heat quicker in the morning now but the strange thing is, its made my car run so much better! Its quieter and smoother which i cant really understand. Not complaining obviously but does anyone know why? I didnt think it would make that much difference.

The only worrying this is that there was a bit of oil in the old water and once i had flushed it through a few times, there was quite a bit of water coming out the exhaust. Does this sound like a head gasket or is it normal?

was it water or steam (exhaust on a cold day) coming from the exhaust?

well alot of steam and a small puddle in the tail pipe. slight dripping

i think you will find that a bit of water out the tail pipe when it is cold is ok it is when the engine is warmed up and water is coming out there is a problem

I'm no expert but could it be running smoother because there is now less strain/resistance on the water pump? All that gunky coolant must have been difficult to pump around.

I did think that, not sure, it could also be that there was a blockage i guess, maybe in the engine block or in the inlet manifold.
