On an a series mini it can be retrieved easily if you know how. I have a magnet on a flexible shaft and ended up flipping it around on top of the gears and pulled it out backwards. Tried for hours to pull it out right way first though.

A quick game of "Gearbox Operation". Second job could be to remove and refit a cam to a 1275 without losing a cam follower.

I know this is an old topic but I'm replying on behalf of a "Friend", who may or may not have managed to drop a drive recently!!

I can confirm that it is possible to retrieve a drive using a magnet, a grabber and a borescope.   Not that difficult and takes about an hour, it's a delicate operation and needs a lot of patience, 2 sets of hands makes it easier.

If you're reading this and need further help, just ask me and I'll put you in touch with my "friend"......

yes, they can fall in. Mainly seems to happen though when people remove the distributor when fitting some sort of programmable ignition system, and leave the drive in the engine and then cap the hole.

There is a threaded hole in the centre of the drive spindle that takes a 5/16unf bolt. Usually a long bolt from the left hand engine mounting bracket makes it very easy to install the spindle in the correct orientation.
