Mini happy returns: 20 years of the new MINI
"The story of the new Mini began, not in 2001, with the arrival of the R50, but in 1997 and the unveiling of the Rover Spiritual concept car. There had been many attempts to create the second coming of Britain’s best car (discuss), but for one reason or another, all had failed. The Austin Metro (née Mini-Metro) was the most famous attempt to build a Mk2, but as history will recall, the Mini lived on long after the Metro had bitten the dust.
Its development was a long and drawn out process, hindered by internal squabbles, disagreements and the not-so-small matter of BMW’s purchase of Rover from British Aerospace and the subsequent sale to Phoenix. Understandably, BMW kept Mini – Rover’s biggest asset – and decided to build the new car in Cowley, unceremoniously renaming the plant BMW Oxford."

1997 New MINI Preview video with John Cooper Interview:-
Interviews with Nick Stephenson (Rover Group Design Director) and John Cooper at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show Preview of the New MINI. With BMW investment the MINI (R50) project was being designed and developed by Rover Engineers at Gaydon with production planned for the Longbridge factory.........

Wheeler Dealers are doing a modern MINI, a 2004 R53 Cooper S MC40.
"Mike tracks down one of only 1000 MC40s ever produced, the 40th anniversary homage to the Monte Carlo rally-winning British icon; Ant tackles the 100,000 mile service while restoring its original ride height and signature look." It's series 15 episode 3, showing in the USA now and a UK broadcast time and date coming very soon.

An insight into the manufacture and production of the MINI at Plant Oxford. 2001 onwards (all models)

In 2015, MINI Plant Oxford produced over 201,000 cars, and with a workforce of around 4,500 people, the plant is capable of building up to 1,000 cars per day. Plant Oxford is the home of MINI assembly, with body panels arriving from Plant Swindon, and engines from Plant Hams Hall, near Birmingham.

The body panels are joined by automated robots to produce a ‘body in white’ which then progresses through the factory to the paint shop, before being mated with engine, suspension, interior panels, trim, etc, to produce the finished car.

This Manual takes a look inside a modern, heavily automated car factory, where every car produced is bespoke, having been built specially to fulfil an individual customer’s order. A fascinating insight into the processes, equipment and people involved behind the scenes in building a MINI, from initial design studies and ‘body-in-white’ metal panels, to completed car on the way to its new owner.

The MINI Y Register

The MINI Y Register is for those who own or have an interest in early BMW MINIs built in 2001.

Your MINI does not have to be on a Y plate, as 51 plates were issued in 2001 however currently the the main focus of the Y Register will be to collect information about MINIs built in the first 6 months of 2001 and predominantly Registered on a Y plate.

For the purpose of this group we have 3 categories your 2001 MINI may fall into:

An early MINI

Any MINI built in 2001 and Registered on a Y plate.

An early press MINI

Any MINI built in April 2001 or earlier and Registered with the sequential number plate Y*** OBL or Registered to the BMW press office.

An early pre production MINI

Anything built on 25/04/01 or earlier as volume production started on 26/04/01.

We also welcome any information you may have on early MINIs and we look forward to opportunities to get together these early MINIs together and enjoy them.

'Modern Classics' magazine below has a feature this month (July issue) on driving & buying an R53 supercharged MINI Cooper S before the majority of them get to the cheap ragged and written off stage, it suggests £3500 will buy a concours example which should start to appreciate over the next few years if maintained and looked after.

02S Register

About

The 02 S Register is for those who own or have an interest in BMW MINI Cooper S models built in 2002.

Your MINI does not have to be on an 02 plate, as 52 plates were issued in 2002.

We also welcome any information you may have on the early MINI Cooper S and we look forward to opportunities to get together these early MINI Cooper S models together and enjoy them.

http://02sregister.co.uk/

Search the 02 S Register

The below table lists ALL right hand drive MINIs manufactured in 2002, identified by their TC6nnnn VIN numbers. Unlike the R50 MINIs where the launch of right hand drive MINIs was initially limited to the UK the R53 was launched in 4 right hand drive regions (UK, Japan, Australia and South Africa) very close together. Therefore the VIN numbers of any one region are not necessarily sequential.

For anyone searching to buy an early R53 MINI Cooper S this list may prove useful. It lists the first 500 or so registration numbers for UK MINIs to help you find that early VIN number when buying!

Changing the filtering of the country column also makes it possible to see how a large number of the early VINs ended up abroad. Therefore it's worth considering this when working out how early in the UK market each car is. This is the purpose of the Country Order column.

We have a sister Register for Y REG MINIs. This site allows each owner of an R50 MINI to register their MINI with the site. This feature is not currently available on the 02S Register.

I have to say my mates GP is a nice bit of kit. all very minimal inside, no rear seats etc, crap headlights (they are very poor compared to the Zenons he had in his JCW) but when he hits the loud pedal it goes like a scalded cat.

Downside though is its a bloody harsh ride although the seats are more supportive. For a limited edition car it will only gain in value.
