so why is my wife's 84 wr quattro cheaper to insure than her 71 clubman?

it depends on a huge amount of factors, not just value and not just how fast it is

things like availability of parts, cost of parts and at a guess even the probability of it being pinched.

Well which car was insured first? or
Were both policys taken out on the same day?
Are they both on classic policys?
Same amount of limited mileage?
Same insurance company?
Are they both fully comp or tpt&t?
Both cars in her name?
Has she owned them for the same amount of time?
Are they both stored in the same place?
Are they both standard?
How much differnce in price is there anyway?

There's always huge variations, even silly things like if you put the mileage usage at 1000 miles then put it at 5000 miles, a lot of the time it's cheaper to do it as 5000 miles.
Just like how sometimes your cheapest quote can be fully comp, rather than tpt&f.
It's why you can't really recomend an insurance company to someone and you have to shop around a lot.
My '72 mk3 with a agreed valuation of 3k is cheaper to insure than my '89 city which I put the value down as 1500 with no agreed valution.
My '89 city is more to insurance now at 19 than it was when I was 17 just passed my test. (ok insurance has gone up but still £800 more than it was when I was 17??)

Landrovers were always cheap - but not obn fuel. I'd imagine any small car that was in a low band.

I'd agree, I've been quoted just under £2100 Fully comp for a Series 2 or 3 and £1024 TPFT but as said, they are very guzzly on fuel especially the petrol ones >:) . A-Series powered vehicles seem to be quite cheap such as Morris Minor's, A35's, Marina's probably cause of their small engines, Viva's and Chevette's have also been mentioned and so hav 2CV's. The way I thought about finding cheap cars was thinking about whether they are likely to have been owned and crashed a lot by young drivers. I've tried looknig into Corsa's, Micra's and I've even Ka's when I was getting desperate and couldn't get under £3000 and although the Co-op will insure me on a BINI and even a 10yr old 2.0 Focus but at £4000, NO.

The only problem I have noticed with classic cars is higher buying prices because of being rare but then again, so are modern cars.
