Hey all I would really appreciate it if youcould make a list for me of all the necessary parts i should replace when rebuilding my 998 in a couple months. i know the main things but just don't want to miss nothing as i've never worked on a mini engine but i have worked on other american engines quite a bit. this post is directed mainly to people who have done this quite a few times (rich) and know what they are talking about. i'm sure everybody could say something but i really only want to spend as little as possible but also want to do it properly thanks a lot everyone

If your doing a complete re-build, then its not worth cutting corners. You want to do it right first time around...

First thing you want to do is get the block checked, make sure it doesnt need an over bore if its excessivly worn. If its ok, then get it honed to clean the glaze off the bores.
Get new piston rings.
Have the crank main and big end jurnals measured and re-ground if needed, then get bearings and thrust washers to suit.
A new oil pump is a must, as too are new cam followers. Check the cam bearings, if they look like they are in a bad way, then get them replaced, but this can cost because of the work envolved. But they dont tend to wear that much.
Back to the block, if there are any deep scratches or nicks in the mating faces, then its worth getting them skimmed to clean.
A new cam chain is a good idea too as they do stretch after a while, and also a new tensioner pad to go with it.
And lastly, the obvious thing is new gaskets all round.

While the head is off, its worth taking the valves out and maybe having new guides put in and the valves and seats re-cut, along with new valve stem seals that come with a head gasket set. Once again, if there are any deep digs in the mating face of the head, get it skimmed to clean.

I've probly missed something out, but the main thing is to remember, if you can replace it first time round - do it. You dont want to have to take it all appart again in 1000 miles time because something you thort would be ok has failed. And remember, cleanliness is the key!!

how much for a cam and what cam would you suggest? This car is going to be my daily driver during the summer and fall so it has to be something practical.

And as far as how much money i want to spend: as littlew as possible.

I'd go to a 266 as it's supposed to be a good performing road cam, with solid low end, mid, high performance. Rev bands about 1500 to 6500 RPM. I've heard that the metro cam is also a good upgrade for the 998 engine. I'm putting my metro cam in my dads 998 as I'm putting a 266 in mine in the next few weeks. I've also heard good things about the SW5 from swift tune, being a good road cam. The thing I liked about the 266 from my readings is that it works well with high lift rockers as I plan on putting some on in the future. The 276 didn't fare as well with such a set up.

The 266 cost me about $150 CAN so it's not any overly large amount. Also through my research it's been said that the cam gives you one of the largest bangs for the buck, as far as performance goes.

hope this helped. :)

I recon MG Metro would be a goodun, cheap and a good solid cam, no need to fiddle with timing it's exactly the same as standard.

I got a spare but a bit far to send it methinks!

I probably wouldn't bother with a 266 cam unless your going to work the head a bit, you probably won't see the full benefit. If your planning some head mods then the 266 will be excellent, as will the SW5. Otherwise a 256 would be fine.
Also don't bother with 1.5 ratio rockers on a 998.

Don't forget the gearbox & clutch with all the engine rebuilding. This is often neglected, & if it's past it's best problems which didn't arise with the standard power output are sure to appear once the power is increased.

Turbo Phil,

I agree with the whole head moding point, as it's what I've done with mine (should of pointed that out. lol). I'm running a 1300cc, and was just pointing out that from my research I've heard that 1.5's with a 266 and modded head = a very nice set up. Not usefull here really but just for reference.

How far off is the stock metro cam from the 256??? As I plan on putting the cam from my metro in my dads 998.

tanks. :)

[QUOTE]Can you get the 256 (or 266) from minispares?

Yes they're both Kent profiles available through Minispares.

266 and 1.5 rockers will be fine on a 1275 but imo would be over the top for even a heavily tuned 998. 1.3 rockers would be ok, as the standard rockers rarely make 2.8-1.

The cam in the Metro will be the basic A+ profile, unless it's an MG Metro in which case it is a great cam in fact similar to the Kent 266.

Phil.
