Hi again.
I've purchased a 1300 SPi engine and I'm in the process of stripping down for a refurb/rebuild. The usual expected spec. Lightweight flywheel, larger valves opened ports and skim. New cam, rockers etc. stage one and hif44 carb. Hoping to produce something nice.
Sadly though I have got to a place where I am now stumped by removing the flywheel.
The Haynes joke book (a hallowed tome) says to pull it off with Rover Tool ??????? or a similar puller. Well I am on a similar puller and I thought I would check before ripping the clutch plates and housing off the face of the flywheel.
Can I pull against the clutch mounting ring? (I mean the ring around the clutch plate which is bolted in 6 places to the flywheel) as I cannot see where else to attach the puller. There are no tapped holes and the cowling/casting is very close to the ring gear so I cannot get down the sides. (can I remove the cowling/casting?)
Comments would be appreciated (keep it clean) as they always are.
I know it will be tight, it's a verto clutch and it's taper mounted.
Thanks in advance

All Mini flywheel and torque converter assemblies have three tapped holes for pulling the assembly off the taper. A standard three legged or gear puller is not the tool to use, you need a specific Mini flywheel puller as Guessworks and the manual both say.

ruler is so the legs going into your flywheel are all the same length so it comes off level. Tap whe you wind on the black nut and should pop off if you are lucky, but they can be an arse to get to pop !!!

top tip - When the bolt's out make sure you take the washer out from behind the bolt.

Cause i dident and could i get the thing off noooooooooooooooooooooooo lol.

spi clutch is different than a normal verto clutch as it has sensor pickup plates on it.

Thank you all.
As always all information is greatly recieved and I have purchased the Halfrauds puller but I haven;t yet tried it out due to being held up at work etc.
I will repost with news. If you don't hear the bang when it comes off.
stay tuned

Most of the issues we see with crankshaft tails are all down to them not getting fitted back on correctly :genius: use a fine grinding paste and in a similar method to lapping in valves lap the outer taper of the crank tail and the inner taper of the flywheel.

Off topic bit :D

Oh and for reference the automatic convertor has 6 bolts but you must never ever remove all 6, only remove 3 for the purposes of removing the convertor.

is it me, or do the verto ones always put up a proper fight to come off, compared to pre-verto?

Yes if I had to compile a matrix of verto against pre-verto and which ones came off the easiest... I would agree that verto tended to be the pain, however the bad pre-verto units I have had have more often been far worse than the bad verto assemblies. I have eaven seen a crank tail that looked like swiss cheease, but the flywheel was undamaged..
