Flywheel off. Mission accomplished. The Halfrauds puller actually seemed to be a reasonable piece of kit. different threaded studs to suit the different types and reasonably robust. I tightened up to a reasonable tension, British leyland 'FT' (flipping tight for the family orientated amongst us) and with a piece of wood and a hammer I gave it a bash through the starter motor hole . One hit and off it came. I know there was probably a chance of damage or distortion but it worked for me and I would not have 'flogged away' at it had it not come off. I also feel that it must be better than applying heat!
Thanks for the tips and comments.

When you put it back on makew sure that you lap it on to the crank tail.

ermm i'm also reading that Haynes manual, but since i'm trying to take an automatic engine block apart, i've come to the point where what I have in front of me gets much different from what the pictures look like in the book, and before I go further, i'd like to know if there are any particular no-nos I should be looking out for.. Can someone help me out with a step by step type explanation? the lat thing i've done is to take the center bolt and washer off. What does the tank thats fitted in front of the flywheel do? and does it come off with a puller just like a flywheel? should I take the gearbox off before the flywheel?

thanks for the info,

Max

For an automatic you need a special puller, only available form us :) or second hand.....

However whichever way you do it, do NOT remove all 6 bolts from the convertor as it will scrap it :D

Convertor will almost certainly be scrap..... it is to do with the shims and balancing of the rotor, ie if it moves one side will be closer than the other side :)

Little bit of a bumpity here. Following the mantra of using the search button and this thread has proved useful! Any idea what the size of the big nut on the end of the flywheel is? Also does the collar behind it just come straight off? I left my Haynes manual at uni so im kind of winging it!

1-1/2" would be a bolt.....

And if it is the bolt then yes the washer does come straight off...

The large nut on the end of the flywheel .... well clutch plunger is 15/16" AF as is the flanged nut underneath...

Ok. So Im at the stage with the puller where shear brute force isnt enough. Which parts should I be heating and hitting with a hammer?

None..... get yourself a decent puller and when you refit a flywheel ALWAYS lap in on to the tila of the crankshaft...

Firstly have you removed the washer that was under the head of the large bolt ?

Have you put a smear of grease on the part of the tool that goes in to the crankshaft tail bolt hole just under the end of the puller bolt ?

Now tighten and once tight... give a couple of sharp taps then tighten some more.... now leave it for a while...

Ive taken the washer out and greased it yeah. The block isnt worth anything to me so Im not worried about damaging the crank. Im after the gearbox!

ruler is so the legs going into your flywheel are all the same length so it comes off level. Tap whe you wind on the black nut and should pop off if you are lucky, but they can be an arse to get to pop !!!

Graham

ps 998 mine not an spi so may be different but can't see why !

TOP TIP....

You may find it easier if th epuller body is the other way around....
