Tuesday lunchtime went home and picked the mini up to take it for the rescheduled mot. As I reversed off the drive on full lock I heard the wheel rub as it was on full lock but thought nothing of it as previously when Ive had the rally tyres on it has rubbed when at certain angles/lock. Anyway dropped it off and went to work.
Had a phone call from my friend at the garage with a couple of things it needed to pass the mot, minor things but one of them was a sharp edge on the front panel!
When I originally built the car I had trimmed the front panel and wings but when I replaced them both I had forgotten to repeat the process . The noise I had heard was the tyres peeling back panel creating a sharp edge. A bit of hasty panel beating and some adjustments and he got it through the mot.
I picked up the car and took it to another friends unit where I was going to spray it. Had tea and set about trimming the panels and masking ready to paint. Anyone who has done bodywork will know that small jobs take a lot longer than planned. Midnight soon arrived and I gave up.
Wednesday evening got the car prepped and masked ready for spraying. Now Ive never sprayed before but my friend has all the equipment so had set them up for me to spray it myself. Learning to spray has been something Ive always wanted to try but it takes a lot of skill to to properly. I was using 2 pack with all the proper safety stuff
With my friend giving me advice the car is painted, quite pleased with the outcome with 2 minor runs that I can sort in a week or so when the paint has hardened properly. One thing that has become noticeable is that the rd9 tartan red is a shade of two out so I plan to paint the rear quarters upto the seam another time. The main thing was it was all one colour and ready for the rally
The plan was to bolt all the stuff back on the next night but found out on Thursday that due to the weather the event was cancelled
But the car is now rebuilt and I can take my time to sort things properly and get it 100% for the next event. First I need to catch up on a few weeks sleep
