Part 2
Tuesday lunchtime went home and picked the mini up to take it for the rescheduled mot. As I reversed off the drive on full lock I heard the wheel rub as it was on full lock but thought nothing of it as previously when Ive had the rally tyres on it has rubbed when at certain angles/lock. Anyway dropped it off and went to work.
Had a phone call from my friend at the garage with a couple of things it needed to pass the mot, minor things but one of them was a sharp edge on the front panel!
When I originally built the car I had trimmed the front panel and wings but when I replaced them both I had forgotten to repeat the process . The noise I had heard was the tyres peeling back panel creating a sharp edge. A bit of hasty panel beating and some adjustments and he got it through the mot.
I picked up the car and took it to another friends unit where I was going to spray it. Had tea and set about trimming the panels and masking ready to paint. Anyone who has done bodywork will know that small jobs take a lot longer than planned. Midnight soon arrived and I gave up.
Wednesday evening got the car prepped and masked ready for spraying. Now Ive never sprayed before but my friend has all the equipment so had set them up for me to spray it myself. Learning to spray has been something Ive always wanted to try but it takes a lot of skill to to properly. I was using 2 pack with all the proper safety stuff
With my friend giving me advice the car is painted, quite pleased with the outcome with 2 minor runs that I can sort in a week or so when the paint has hardened properly. One thing that has become noticeable is that the rd9 tartan red is a shade of two out so I plan to paint the rear quarters upto the seam another time. The main thing was it was all one colour and ready for the rally
The plan was to bolt all the stuff back on the next night but found out on Thursday that due to the weather the event was cancelled
But the car is now rebuilt and I can take my time to sort things properly and get it 100% for the next event. First I need to catch up on a few weeks sleep

The car is still in use though I haven’t updated this in a while
I’ve done a couple of events since the last post and all has been going well
A couple of things have been changed , it now has a steel bonnet and glass windows( to keep working the historic regulations )
We had our best result last time out and won our class so all the hard work has been worth it
Just need to get the engine out now to sort an oil leak from the timing case and the transmission is making a noise which I’m pretty sure is the drop gear idler bearing . A friend of mine has offered a set of MED drop gears so I may upgrade while the engine is out

Sorry for such a long time to reply
Yes Richard , I used a pattern from a friends spotlight bar to make my own

Time for an update as it’s been too long
With an obvious lay off we got the mini back out for this septembers Tour of Cheshire
Things didn’t go too well from the start as at the very first control another car hadn’t seen we had stopped and ran into the back of us
Luckily we could continue but the competitor behind us in his 1071s couldn’t 😞
The handling wasn’t the best but we finished a respectable 2nd in class 33rd overall
It wasn’t until the next day when I looked at it properly and it is quite badly bent , rear subframe , rear panel , boot floor , OSr quarter etc. My heart sank when I realised the extent and when I had the insurance quote through I was sure it was a write off , but no
Luckily the guy who hit us was insured to the hilt and it went off last week to start and get repaired .

Eh up Si. Long time and all that.  Sorry to hear about your misfortunes - gutted to see the mini all bent up, but at least it's being fixed and will be put right.  You're the third person I know to have been rear ended at a control on a road rally and bad luck given the fairly slow speeds.  She's still looking good though mate and i'm glad to see you're still out thrashing the nuts off it (good result by the way).....I'm still beavering away and might get the mini out at some point....watch this space!!!

Hello Dave long time no chat , how’s the family ?
Have you got yours repaired yet?
Yeah I’m still about and hopefully out more now the world is calming down

Well I’ve got it back after a few thousand £ of repairs and they have done a fantastic job
Better than ever I hope , just need to sort an oil leak out and it’s ready to go again
Thanks to Mark and his team at Jam motorsport
