Hi all,

I know this is a long shot but someone here might be able to help me. Driving to work last week & the motor just quits, as if ignition switched off. Stop at side of road & check all the usual things. Have ignition lights on, engine cranks ok but no cough or splutter. Call wife to come & collect me (7.00am) ! Not a good idea, anyhow she finally arrives, having spent most of the time doing her hair & makeup, oh, & looking for a tow rope. So we tow the car home & push it in the garage & I go off to work in her car. Spend all day wondering where the fault could lie & finally get home , had thought the car might fire up when cold but no, it doesn't want to know. Time to get my hands dirty, checked for spark at plugs & yes they are all firing away merrily but they were damp when I took them out, dicconnected all the engine sensor wiring & the ECU, did total continuity check on engine wiring & all seems fine. Checked sensors as best I could & they all seem ok. Re-assemble everything, engine still won't start but I tried with the throttle wide open & after a struggle she bursts into life but will only run at high throttle settings. It appears to be getting far too much fuel at lower RPM's & that is flooding the spark. So if anyone here can come up with any suggestions I'd be most grateful. What really irks me though is that I gave away a good ECU last year, so I can't use that anymore for fault finding argh!

Cheers,

Nick

ps sorry about the long rambling post but it's beginning to do my head in!

The reason why its starts when you press the throttle fully is in this position, if the ECU senses no revs it cuts all the fuel off.

Apart from that, I know very little about injection Mini's

You could try by passing the temp sensor, if this is telling the ecu that its cold then might be your problem

Thanks for the reply Siggy but that would only make sense if the engine wasn't turning, which it does as soon as the starter is operated. As for by passing the temp sensor, I don't think that would make a vast deal of difference.

If anyone can check the resistance across the fuel injector & let me know, I would be grateful, as I suspect that is where the problem lies. The resistance across mine is very low about 1 ohm & I suspect it is opening fully when a low voltage is applied.

Cheers,

Nick

A mate of mine had an injection that kept dieing like yours did and it turned out to be the stuffing in the cat had broken apart, blown back and blocked the exhaust causing too much back preasure in the engine. When we took the exhaust off loads of honeycombe fell out.

They are designed to cut the fuel at full throttle when the engine is cranking.

As there is no choke the ECU takes a reading from the water temp and adjusts the fueling to suit.

Just incase anyone is interested the problem was in the ECU, the injection chip was giving out incorrect info to the injector. Had it repaired by Mike Atkins at Auto-Matec in Plympton, Devon. Can highly recommend the service, dropped the ECU in to him on Saturday morning, collected it today. if anyone wants his number let me know.

Cheers,

Nick
