I would stay clear of the HP mini series.

We had our HP mini 2133 for 2 yeaRs now and it just stopped displaying anything (on its screen or on an external monitor). A google search later and we found that it was one a common fault, and 2 an economically unfixable one!

Performance wise, I dont rate them either. Anything too strenuous and they struggle. Battery life was never a problem.

I don't suppose it was something to do with the positioning of the graphics chip by any chance? It seems to be a trick HP are really really fond of.

I've had a Samsung NC10 for about three years now. I've dropped it, spilt paint stripper on it (Minis are a curse, haha) and it's still working as good as the day I got it. If you got one of the newer versions of the same, you'd be set.

I would steer clear of HP for everything and anything. While I was at Uni. I knew three people with three different HP laptops and they all suffered spectacular but completely different failures. There is much more reliable devices on the market, probably for less money.

I should ask though, are you sure a Netbook is what you need? If you're going to be doing word processing and the like on it, you're pushing it beyond what Netbooks are really aimed at. Don't get me wrong, it will do it all day long but it won't do it as nicely or as comfortably as a low end laptop would.
