Ive been involved in a few stag resto's

I love them, the sound of the engine is perfect.

Yh girlfriends have to like minis, or just wont work otherwise.
However I am going to buy a 6n2 polo, I cant run Noddy in the bad weather. And I dont want to bump his milage up unnecessarily.

Noddy runs, and I drove him to a vw meet! BUT.....

He isnt right, the vacume guage is showing he is sucking hard. Its like he is being strangled. He idles okay, but lumpy and underpowered when you try and drive off. The olny thing I changed was to reset the rocker to valve clearances? they were miles out. But now are correct to the haynes manual?

Can anyone shed any light?

The problem was found to be a leak on the pipe to the vacuum advance:/

Just needs the timming adjusted then all back correct

guys,

noddy needs setting up on a rolling road, im not happy with how he is running currently.

i was thinking on a stage one kit for a while now, and with a rolling road set up needed may be the right time to do!

has anyone had any experiences with stage one kits on 1098 engines? are there noticable improvments?

thanks a bunch

A stage one kit will improve a 1098 in the same way it would on a 998 or 1275. Improving the flow into and out of the engine.

I had to run the 1275 in my Clubman estate on a standard exhaust and manifolds for a while, it made a massive difference on the A roads, hills and motorways once it the stage 1 kit fitted. Same as for my old 998 Mini.

thanks miniman clive, ive only ever experienced being in 3 minis in my life! a 998 with a a stage one. i looked at buying it but didnt like the mods it had. but with 3 up it was horrifically slow.

my mates 1997 cooper mpi completly stock. and my standard engined 1098 estate.

my estate doesnt feel too slow especailly 0-40 ish but at say 50 n then a small gradient it slows down in a big way! thats what im trying to overcome a little.

for the estates is there a kit which people reccomend, i want good quality and am looking at the minispares kit, i will need to modify it somehow tho as all exhausts are for saloon lenght minis?

Maniflow do a stage 1 exhaust system for long wheel base type minis, you may need to buy parts seperately though, see about getting LCB manifold to attach to your shiney new system aswell, makes a world of difference!

i seem to remeber reading a while ago 'excuse me ignorance' that LCBs arn't really necessary on small bores, recomended something like a Maniflow cooper freeflow?

in the futire I plan to twin carb Noddy but for now as he is a daily i need fuel efficency! so possibly that exhaust and maifold witha secondhand inlet manifold probly the best option for me?

yes that would be a good bet, just the simple rule of get exhaust gas out then the fuel can burn easier making it more efficient, K&N cone filter is always the best bet for induction for more freeflowing air but if you dont like the noise then i think you can filter elements from K&N

i drove mine without the aircleaner on once, is the noise similar to that?

that would probably annoy me! so you the k&n element is probably what id do!

The standard airbox with a few holes drilled at the front, with a k&n filter element shouldn't be too loud, I've never actually heard a k&n pancake filter in a mini, but I'm told they're quite loud

Also the manifold that suits a 998 best is indeed the freeflow here

Christams wishlist so far;

Second hand waterheaded alloy inlet manifold
Cooper freeflow exhaust mainifold
Mainflow lwb exhaust system
K&N air filter

What is a decent size bore exhaust? i dont want anything big sticking out the back!
