I've decided to rip up the bitumen that covers just about everything on the floor of my Mini and replace it with some sound deadening material, to see what lurks underneath. The obvious first choice would be dyna mat, but it isn't half expensive. Any other recommendations? I could buy some cheap off eBay, but wouldn't like to find out it's useless after I fit it.

Silent coat, I used the 2mm stuff on the doors, and the 4mm stuff on the back seat panel with an extra 8mm foam panel. did it this week end so cant comment yet and I also havent done the front bulkhead so I wont know, but from the looks of it its quite good.

Have a look a Car Audio direct's website, they got a few choices for sound deadening

Drove into work this morning after driving it has made a noticeable difference, less 'rattly' especially when going 70mph on the motorway, so should be good once I've done the bulkhead at the front!

Second vote for Silent coat if dynamat is so steep.

Plus on the floor and bulkhead under the carpet use from underlay or felt.

When putting sound proofing on the floor. Does it not interfere with the u bar that the seat subframes clip into?

A layer of deadining then felt must be quite thick. Just asking as im in the process of buying some now. Any sort of felt in particular i should look at or just normal felt do the job?

Cheers Mike

Was thinking of getting this?

What parts ok the car are you planning on covering?

The felt I've used is just flooring underlay type, in fact i didn't use felt on my latest build it was fire retardant foam underlay.
But then again by Dad is a flooring contractor ;)

Somewhere like Carpet Right will be sell it off the roll.

I reckon most noise on a Mini comes through the bulkhead (makes sense really..)! With that in mind, I'd love to totally strip everything off my toebard/ bulkhead/ dash area and apply some pukka modern soundproofing! At the moment, my '75 has nothing at all.. so, so noisy

Its also come in via the screen... no really.

So deadening the bonnet also helps a lot.

I was going to proof behind the dash, bulkhead, floor, and rear seats/arches. Also the arches in the front. Was going to put some felt stuff on just for astheric reasons like on the arches e.t,c where it is visible.

So Going to use Silent coat on the bottom on vtop of a layer of waxoil.

Then was thinking some of this 3mm Underlay for the floor, bulkhead and arches just for a bit extra. and Possibly some flashing tape for the extra noisy bits.

Finished off with a new carpet when i find one :)

I think he means on top of the floor silent coat, on the underneath waxoyl.

by the way I'm not sure that pack will have enough for all the panels you want to do...

Why do you want to put Waxoyl on the inside of your car? Are you expecting a lot of water inside for some reason?

Quote from Waxoyl website:
"Waxoyl is very good at 'self healing' as it maintains some flexibilty and never totally sets so stone chips and scrapes often seal themselves over time making it great for hard working vehicles like 4x4s and other off-rad vehicles."

It should only be used on the outside of your car or inside boxed sections of body work. You only need to have the floor dry, clean(of oils etc) & dust free then apply the sound deadening directly to the body itself. If you try to stick it over waxoyl then all you will do is render the adhesive & therefore the sound deadening useless.
