what is the advantage though, the gears are fairly efficient (talking about SC) and dont take up much power to transfer the power from crank to primary shaft, you also cannot change ratios very easily at all with this, and there is a fear of the chain snapping. i only assume the gears would be stronger than the chain, but i dont know, never worked with chains!

Google range rover or pajero transfer box chain.

You can change ratios just as easily.

You won't snap that chain in a hurry.

As for advantage - huge power capacity, quiet transmission without end thrust.

These are the roller bearing type from MED. Strong and not quiet as noisy as the type that use the original idler bearings, but pretty expensive.

But as already mentioned by Guessworks, don't forget one of these.

I've got a straight cut box with straight cut drop gears and don't find the noise from it that bad, the engine noise is louder than the gearbox!

The slightly funny noise is the gain setting being to high on the mic and not the car (thankfully).

The gearbox is in 4th gear on the vid so most of the whine is from the drop gears (Jack Knight versions).

My Bro has the Med drop gears and again yes they are noisier than the helical versions I wouldn't say they make your ears bleed.

The older drop gears he used to have were very noisy though (I'll find out what they were).
