Hi there im new to the forrm but am currently pondering on the idea of a r1 zcars conversion. The front brakes will obviously need uprating but what too. Its been suggested that metro turbo are the way forward but to use someone elses phrase they seem to have a marmite like effect, people either love em or hate em. So opinions please.

cheers

my mates got a 140bhp hillclimb mini, all he's got on it is non servoed 's' discs with ebc carbon pads, that stops ok from about a ton, with a bit of a hefty shove on the pedal. but if your fitting big wheels, the worlds your oyster for big brakes.

I'm using metro turbo hubs because they have 4pot calipers. with cross drilled, grooved and vented disks with greenstuff pads.
-£50 for mk2 hubs and mk1 ball joints.
-£30 for twin braided brake hose conversion
-£24 for disks (£34 for the ones I went for) but OE disks will be more than fine.
-£24 for greenstuff pads.

=£128

But opinion is split between the above and the mini hubs with solid disks and Upgraded calipers.

I think you'll need
-groved disks(probably £30)
-new upgraded calipers (I think £140???)
-braided hoses (singles)(£30)
-Pads (£24)

But if you've got the marmite phrase you'll have seen the pro's and cons from the fiesta calipers thread.

I think it's down to personal choice I'm afraid mate.

If you have got the money to fit a R1 engine in your car, you have got the money for some aluminium 4 pot calipers from minisport,, they even fit under 10" wheels!!!!!! and if you are going for bigger than 10" go for the aluminium 6pot calipers!! they are about £300 for the calipers.

On a normal mini use Mini fin ally drums at the back. They will do the trick and will be no hassle to fit.
You don't need disks because you run the risk of the rear end locking up.

Just out of interest for 10 inch wheels what is the difference between a 7.5" disk set up (reasonably cheap) and a cooper S disk set up (expensive). I will probably be using one of these set ups on my new car and there is a big price difference so am wondering why??

For 10 iunch wheels there are 3 sizes of brakes.

7 inch Cooper (not 'S') THESE ARE NOT MUCH BETTER THAN DRUMS.

7.5 Cooper 'S', early 1275GT

Modified 8.4 discs, machined down to 7.8 inch (IIRC) and alloy 4 pot calipers.

8.4s are std Mini discs from 85 (ish) on and only fit with 12inch wheels

Siggy
